Ask Great Questions, Listen - Keys to Becoming Approachable

Meredith Bell's most recent article offers great advice for becoming more approachable. Engage people in a topic they care deeply about by asking great "passion-finding" questions to get the conversation flowing naturally. Then listen carefully so you can ask follow up questions to discover what matters most to them.

Read Are You Approachable?

For those looking to boost their listening skills, I recommend the Personal Listening Profile, an online assessment that helps you learn to listen and respond with purpose.

DiSC Helps with Career Transition

Times are tough. More and more people are facing a layoff, wondering what to do next. I read an article yesterday that advised people to consider it a unique opportunity, to take charge of the situation, figure out what you really want to do, and create your own future.

Roger Wenschlag's book We Hug in the Hallways Here could not have hit the shelves at a better time.DiSC Profile & DiSC Book

Using the DiSC model and case studies, Wenschlag zeros in on style-based motivators and demotivators that can make or break job success. The book describes each of the 4 DiSC styles in-depth, offers case studies of real people in their favorite jobs, and gives tips and recommendations about the kind of work and work cultures that best fit someone of that style.

Take the DiSC Profile and read We Hug in the Hallways Here to help yourself or someone you know find their next job or career.

New Use for Everything DiSC Management!

The newest facilitation System from Inscape Publishing, Everything DiSC Management, has recently been used for Teambuilding!

As with the DiSC Classic, one of the many benefits of utilizing the tool is that every person is able to gain new insights to understanding themselves and others. This knowledge alone helps to build teams. If you are able to take the team even further through the process, they are not only able see how effective they are as managers, but they can also envision the effectiveness of the team.

One of the benefits of using the Everything DiSC Management Profile in a teambuilding setting is that you can help to mold a management team that can rely one another and have that common language in DiSC. Finally, one of the best benefits is that this program lends itself to follow up work, which is where trainers have a genuine opportunity to see growth.

Everything DiSC Pulse - New Training Magazine Column

Inscape Publishing's director of research, Mark Scullard, and president and CEO, Jeffrey Sugerman, debuted a new column, "Everything DiSC Pulse," in the "Training Today" section of Training magazine last month.

In each column they will offer "a learner's perspective on training: what's important, what works, and what doesn't work for learners" and will elaborate on their findings.

In their first column, Learners Say: Simple Techniques Improve Training, Scullard and Sugarman discuss their recent study about common training techniques, and how the presence (or absence) of those elements impacts job effectiveness.

Their findings show that when training included "problem-solving exercises, multiple examples, practice, and action planning, participants noted a significantly greater impact on self-perceived job effectiveness. "

Establishing Effective Communication Channels

I recently had a conversation with a DiSC Trainer who was concerned about an upcoming DiSC Training she had scheduled. The team was experiencing some conflict and upon reviewing their completed profiles (they used the DiSC Classic 2.0 Online Profile), she could see why. Everyone was a high D or C. When I was talking with her about the session, it reminded me of a great article that identifies the success of working with a team very similar to hers. I decided to share it with you...

DiSC training helps establish Effective Communication Channels

Do any of you have success stories or testimonials to share? If so, please feel free to post in a comment below, or try out our new service – write your own testimonial to be posted on our site!

It's All About Personality: DiSC Drivers

Communication works only from one member of "us" to another. Communication in organization—and this may be the true lesson of our communication failure and the true measure of our communication need—is not a means of organization. It is the mode of organization. —Peter F. Drucker, 1973

I think as trainers and users of DiSC, we all love to learn more about the tools, including ways they are used and how to most effectively use them. With the release of the new Everything DiSC Application Library, a new DiSC model is introduced. The new circular model is simple and intuitive, but it conveys a great deal of information about a person’s DiSC Profile at a glance.

In light of new knowledge, I want to share a great article with you. It’s called It’s All About Personality: DiSC Drivers.

Do you have any feedback or success stories about ways YOU have used the DiSC Application Library (Everything DiSC Classic, Everything DiSC Management, or Everything DiSC Sales)? If so, I would love to hear from you! Please feel free to post...

Celebrity DiSC Styles & DiSC Humor

It’s a busy time in the news these days with the upcoming election. One thing that I love to do when the news starts to flair up is to try and decipher the behavioral styles of the people that I see on TV. It can be a movie star, a TV show character, or your local news anchorperson! Doing this little personal DiSC exercise proves to be very entertaining to me. Here are some examples of public figures that we have analyzed:

¨ High D’s

o David Letterman
o Tiger Woods

¨ High i’s

o Oprah Winfrey
o Jay Leno

¨ High S’s

o Mother Theresa
o Martin Luther King

¨ High C’s

o Woody Allen
o Martha Stewart

I would love to hear about your predictions about the following political figures’ DiSC behavioral styles! Please post your responses in a comment!

¨ Hillary Clinton
¨ John McCain
¨ Barack Obama
¨ George W. Bush

Another thing I love to do is read through some DiSC Humor. For example:

Getting on a busy elevator…

¨ The D walks up, gets on the elevator, and pushes the button that closes the door.
¨ The i lets other in, says “Always room for one more,” and “Come in, you’re going to be late; we’ll wait for you!”
¨ The S will wait in line, moving from one line to another, appearing unable to make a decision.
¨ The C will get on the elevator. If it’s crowded, the C will count the number of people and, if the number is over the limit, will make someone get off.

Shifting DiSC Styles

On one of our recent DiSConference calls, Judy Zitzloff introduced an AWESOME exercise! It certainly ranks in my top 3 to date… I want to share it with everyone because of the diversity of the activity. It can be used in several situations, including the following:

  • Teambuilding
  • Communication
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Adapting to Change
  • Problem Solving

I have attached this great DiSC exercise for you to try in your next session. Please feel free to post your successes, or other exercises that you have found valuable and want to share.

New DiSC Profile Helps Managers Bring Out the Best in Every Employee

We're very excited about the latest DiSC training program from Inscape Publishing's "Everything DiSC" series.

The Everything DiSC Management Profile provides a 26-page report that helps managers understand themselves, their employees, and their own bosses.

Everything DiSC Management focuses on 5 important areas of management:

  1. Your DiSC Management Style

  2. Directing and Delegating

  3. Motivation

  4. Developing Others

  5. Working with YOUR Manager

Clients are raving about the customization options Everything DiSC Management offers.

The profile itself is EPIC-based so you can run it right from your own EPIC Account. This allows you to remove or rearrange pages, print only selected sections, or customize the report title.

A DiSC Question - I'm Stumped!!

Last week I had a great question about the DiSC Profile, specifically the word version. Here is the DiSC question I received:

When looking at the DiSC report on the page with the graph that shows the tally box scoring, what does the column “N” mean? Here is an example of what I am asking to learn more about:

D I S C N
DiSC Tally BoxMost 12 6 4 5 1
Least 2 5 12 9 0
Different 10 1 -8 -4

This DiSC question stumped me! I had never heard it before in my 5 ½ years with Resources Unlimited! After some research and a conversation with the publisher, I had an answer. I decided that it is definitely one to be shared. Here is the response I sent:

In all psychological assessments, the null value is used to “level the playing field” for all of the scales. The values that are null (N) do not get measured by any of the scales. An example of this could be the word “happy.” Let’s say that happy would be an “i” word. Well, just because “unhappy” is the opposite, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a characteristic of a high “C.” In other words, the word might fit in a “most” category, but not in a “least.” They recommended that you review the research report below. Page 13 was specifically noted…

http://www.resourcesunlimited.com/images/DiSC_Validation_Research_Report.pdf

Has anyone else ever received this DiSC question? If so, how did you respond?

Bring DiSC to a Broader Range of Learners

Did you know there are two response style options for the Online DiSC Classic 2.0 Profile for those who have an EPIC Account?

1. DiSC Word Version—The respondent is presented with four words from which he/she chooses one that is "Most Like Me" and one that is "Least Like Me."

2. DiSC Phrase Version—The respondent is presented with four phrases from which he/she chooses one that is "Most Like Me" and one that is "Least Like Me."

The phrase option allows you to bring DiSC to a broader range of learners as the responses are written at a sixth-grade reading level. It's a great option to use with learners who speak English as a second language.

Both the word and phrase response versions produce the same DiSC Classic 2.0 Report and both response style reports may be used when generating DiSC Group Culture Reports.

Visit the EPIC Account Help section or call 800.278.1292 to learn how to select the DiSC Phrase response style for your Online DiSC Classic 2.0 Profiles.

Note: The Phrase Response version is also available for the DiSC General Characteristics Report.

Everything DiSC Sales Profile

One of the first things I learned when I started working at Resources Unlimited is that not everyone responds the same way to a sales pitch. While it was very enlightening and extremely helpful to learn the processes of selling to our customers, I had a personal experience, where I was the customer, that made me have one of those, “a-ha!” moments. It was then that I truly realized how different each person is and how every sales person needs DiSC training!

Recently, a new sales assessment was released called the Everything DiSC Sales Profile. This new DiSC profile is a 22-page report that uses a circular graph to show your location within the DiSC model. It was designed to help salespeople learn to communicate more effectively and improve their sales relationships by covering three main objectives:

  1. Understanding their own DiSC Sales Style
  2. Identifying and understanding their customer’s DiSC buying styles
  3. Adapting their DiSC Sales Style to meet their customer’s needs

Additionally, the Everything DiSC Sales Profile also includes post-training reinforcement with five personalized Customer Interaction Maps.

To enhance the DiSC assessment, an entire sales training program was developed. The Everything DiSC Sales Program provides everything necessary to deliver valuable DiSC Sales Training using the Everything DiSC Sales Profile.

Have YOU tried the new Everything DiSC Sales Report and/or Sales Program? If so, we would love to hear about your success stories. Please comment below or contact us at 515/278.1292 or info@ResourcesUnlimited.com.

DiSC Exercises

I had an interesting call with a client a couple of weeks ago about DiSC exercises and training tools. She was preparing to do a teambuilding session with a group of high level managers in a well-known construction company. She explained to me that she had been struggling with this group because collectively, they could not come up with a single idea that everyone agreed on. Each individual believed that his or her idea was best and no one was interested in compromise. While I was 99% sure that I already knew the answer, I asked her what the group culture was. Not surprisingly, she told me the 100% of the group had a primary or secondary D. We started to discuss some options for exercises that this group would open communication lines. We settled on two main exercises and I have attached instructions for each of them.

One of my favorite things about DiSC is its versatility. You can create your own exercises or mold existing ones to suit your needs, and it’s helpful in essentially any situation.

Choosing the DiSC Facilitator Report and/or DiSC Group Culture Report

Would you like to compile the DiSC results of your team?

Inscape Publishing has developed two DiSC Group Reports to help you analyze your team. These reports can be created after two or more people have completed the DiSC Classic 2.0 Online Report or the DiSC General Characteristics Online Report. Use the contents below to determine which report best suits the purpose of your upcoming DiSC session.

DiSC Group Culture Report

The DiSC Group Culture Report was developed to help you explore the DiSC style, or culture, of a group. Once you know the culture — its characteristics, advantages, and drawbacks — you're better prepared to open meaningful discussions with group members in a group setting or one-on-one.

The DiSC Group Culture Report provides a breakdown of your group members by DiSC style and Classical Pattern distribution, advantages and drawbacks of the culture in your group, and other issues to consider.

Unique Characteristics:
  • The DiSC Group Culture Report was designed for beginner DiSC learners.
  • This DiSC report does not include participant names, which allows for a safe jumping-off point to discuss your group’s culture.
DiSC Facilitator Report

The DiSC Facilitator Report is designed to help you better understand the diversity of interpersonal styles within your group so that you can help participants use their DiSC knowledge most effectively. The DiSC Facilitator Report provides a composite of your group's DiSC styles, allowing you to quickly and easily build customized group reports using data from DiSC Classic 2.0 or DiSC General Characteristics.

The DiSC Facilitator Report helps you identify the DiSC styles of both individual group members and the group itself.

Unique Characteristics:
  • The DiSC Facilitator Report was designed with the DiSC Trainer in mind. Language style and report contents are written for someone who is more familiar with DiSC.
  • This DiSC report includes names and each group members' DiSC Graph to help you facilitate your DiSC training session.
  • This report allows you to compare your group distribution in the four styles against the general population.

When to Use DiSC Group Reports:

  • When your focus is team development
  • When you want to see the similarities and differences of group members' styles
  • When you want to improve the group's understanding of each other, address conflicts in the group, or examine the group culture
  • When you want to help group members understand how they fit into the culture of the group

Note: The DiSC Group Reports can include an unlimited number of participants.

DiSC Training Reinforcement

Using DiSC training tools after your participants have completed the DiSC Profile will help them remember the techniques you taught, and will reinforce DiSC learning in the organization.

One DiSC tool you can easily administer via email is the Reinforcing Your Understanding of Behavioral Styles Online Course. This DiSC-based course can be completed at the participant's own pace, and can be taken as frequently as necessary for 1 year.

Participants taking the online course will learn how to recognize DiSC behavioral styles by listening to the conversational style of others. For example, if the person asks a lot of "why" questions and takes time to think about what he is saying, most likely he has a high C behavioral style. Once you know the DiSC behavioral style, you can easily adapt your own behavior to more effectively communicate with others.

Participants will also learn to be aware of their behavioral style, and have strategies for adapting their DiSC behavioral style depending on the specific situation.

The course finishes by allowing participants to test their abilities. The participant will hear a person describing a situation. Her manner of speaking and the words that she chooses will indicate her behavioral style. Once the course participant chooses the correct behavioral style, he/she must choose the most appropriate way to deal with the situation.

DiSC Paper Profiles vs. DiSC Online Profiles

If you are interested in using the DiSC Profile within your organization, there is one basic thought to consider: would you like participants to complete the DiSC Paper Profile or the DiSC Online Profile? Both will get you to the same destinations (enhanced communication, conflict resolution, better teams, etc), but there are a few main differences. Once you understand the differences and similarities, you can more easily choose the best profile for your situation.

The DiSC Classic Paper Profile

This is the original DiSC Profile. As a self-scoring assessment, the DiSC Paper Profile will take approximately 30 minutes to complete the questionnaire portion and score the graphs. Make sure your training session is long enough to accommodate this.

Also keep in mind that the DiSC Paper Profiles will need to be shipped to you (we can send your profiles via Next Day or Second Day Air if you are in a bind).

DiSC Paper Profile sections include:
  • DiSC Graphs I, II, and III
  • General highlights of each DiSC style
  • Intensity Index
  • All DiSC Classic Profile Patterns

Choose the DiSC Classic Paper Profile when:

  • The Internet is not readily accessible to your participants
  • You only want standard descriptions of DiSC styles and patterns
  • Trust is low among your participants, to give them more control over their DiSC reports
  • You want to show your participants how their DiSC scores are derived

DiSC Classic 2.0 Online Profile

The online DiSC profile can be sent to you 30 minutes after we receive your order during regular business hours. The DiSC Online Profile is sent via email to you or directly to your participants. The questionnaire is completed online, and the results are calculated electronically for you. As a trainer, you can control whether or not the participant can view his/her own results. Many of our clients choose to print the DiSC reports out themselves and bring them to the training session.

The DiSC Classic 2.0 includes many enhancements. For example, you have the ability to add supplemental reports, which will provide more information on the participant's behavior in a sales, team, or management environment.

Plus, you can easily manage your DiSC Online Profiles with an EPIC Account.

DiSC Online Profile sections include:

  • DiSC Graph
  • Explanation of your highest DiSC style(s)
  • Intensity Index
  • Interpretation of each highlighted word in your Intensity Index
  • Your narrative DiSC Classical Profile Pattern (Your Motivation, Your Work Habits, and Insights for You)
  • The DiSC model
  • General highlights of each DiSC style
  • All DiSC Classic Profile Patterns

Choose the DiSC 2.0 Online Profile when:

  • The Internet is readily accessible to your participants
  • You want personalized descriptions of each participant's DiSC style and pattern in addition to standard descriptions
  • You want a pool of descriptive words that are positive in tone
  • You want to see the participant reports before the training
  • You do not have enough time to administer the DiSC profile during training

Our DiSC Experts are available to help you determine which assessment is best for you. Feel free to call our office at 800.278.1292.
